Fall Driving Tip #9: Break Bad Driving Habits on Slick Roads
November is a wet month where we can see rain, ice, sleet, even snow. Paired with lower temperatures, we’re left with slick roads that make it harder to slow down or stop.
When it comes to safe driving, a properly maintained vehicle is just step one.
Adjusting the way you drive is equally as important. That means avoiding commonplace bad driving habits:
- Adjust to weather and visibility, and always reduce your speed on wet, icy, gravel-filled, or dark roads.
- Remove leaves or debris from your tires which can reduce traction.
- Increase following distance and avoid aggressive driving habits. (Ex: Don’t close the gap between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead to pressure them to change lanes. The bigger the gap, the more time you have to react and slow down.)
- Avoid distractions like scrolling playlists, texting, and eating/drinking behind the wheel. 3 seconds is all it takes for an accident to happen.
- Know where you’re going and begin changing lanes well in advance. Slick roads are not the time to cut traffic or abruptly change lanes so you don’t miss an exit/turn.
- Never try to race a school bus with flashing lights, or a yellow light. Traffic signals are in place to ensure everyone’s safety.
Wet pavement and speeding are two of the leading causes of car accidents. If you’ve sustained an injury because another driver was acting recklessly behind the wheel, call Multerer Law at 716-882-8828. We’re here to help.
