Fall Driving Tip #2: Be Vigilant For Deer + Deer Collisions.
As wildlife prepares for winter, deer activity increases and along with it, the number of deer collisions.
Deer are most active between October and January, especially in the early morning and evening hours when visibility is already hampered by sun glare or darkness.
Protect yourself and reduce your risk of a collision – either with a deer or another vehicle on the road – and:
- Watch for deer signs and be on the lookout for deer both in the road or on the side of the road
- Reduce your speed in regions with higher wildlife activity
- Use high beams when possible to increase and expand visibility
- Exercise caution if you come across a deer; there’s probably more nearby
- Never swerve, even if a collision is inevitable; hitting a deer can cause less damage than striking another vehicle
- Always wear a seatbelt to decrease your chance of injury in the event of an accident
