Back to school means school buses and increased pedestrian/vehicle traffic. Protect yourself and students with these safety tips.

Back to School Safety Tips

Back to school means three things: school buses, increased pedestrian traffic, and increased vehicle traffic.

If you live or work near a school, have a child in school, or pass through a school zone, it’s important to exercise caution and always be aware of your surroundings.

Schooltime means children walking, driving, bicycling, and even skateboarding to school. Protect yourself and them:

  • Look twice and check your blind spots/directly behind your vehicle before backing out of your driveway.
  • Stop for any school bus with flashing yellow lights. It means the bus is about to come to a stop.
  • Stop for any school bus with flashing red lights and a stop arm extended. It’s illegal in all states to pass a loading school bus.
  • Stay alert for children crossing the street. Not every child will cross at the corner or inside a crosswalk.
  • Be aware of school zones and obey all flashing beacons and decreased speed limits.
  • Be mindful of new/teen drivers who are learning to drive.
  • Watch for bicyclists and share the road.
  • Minimize distractions so that your focus is on the road ahead.

Not every driver will properly adjust their habits to increase safety in school zones, but you can.
