School Bus Safety
School buses consistently stop and start as they load and unload students. Getting “stuck” behind a school bus may aggravate drivers in a rush to get to work or drop their own child off, but school bus safety is critical for protecting neighborhood children who rely on the bus.
Just like with traffic lights, yellow means SLOW, and red means STOP.
Flashing yellow lights means the bus is about to stop, and you should slow down and prepare to stop as well.
Flashing red lights and extended stop arms means a child is getting on or off the bus. You are legally required to stop in either direction in all 50 states until the red lights stop flashing. Violators not only risk a fine, points on their license, or losing their license, they risk hitting, injuring, or killing a child.
If a bus has their red lights flashing and the car ahead of you fails to stop, do not pass.
If a bus is coming the opposite direction and has their red lights flashing, do not pass.
Slow down around school zones. Stay alert. And keep your neighborhood roads safe for all children.
