Summer Driving Safety Tip #16: Properly navigate blind turns.
Street parking is a must in many neighborhoods and shopping districts, but this often creates “blind turns” for vehicles pulling out of parking lots or turning off side streets. Safely navigating blind turns is essential for preventing easily-avoidable accidents and collisions.
Never risk pulling out unless you’re sure there are no oncoming vehicles.
Never “floor it” and hope no cars are coming.
Mitigate your risk and:
• Identify any blind spots that may block you from seeing pedestrians or cyclists preparing to cross in front of your vehicle before turning
• Use your turn signal to indicate which direction you plan to go
• Eliminate distractions so your attention is solely on the road
• Check oncoming traffic multiple times before turning
• Slowly creep forward so improve your visibility
• Listen for traffic
• Don’t hesitate if you see your path is clear to pull out – traffic continuously changes
• Prepare for a wide turn to avoid curbs and parked vehicles
• Avoid turning when another car is passing
• Turn into the nearest lane on two-lane roads
