Common Causes of Car Accidents #17: Inexperienced Drivers
Let’s make one thing clear: “Inexperienced drivers” does not mean “bad drivers.”
Driving is a skill. The more you practice, the better you get. The more experience you have driving, the more comfortable you get behind the wheel. This means you’re less tense and less likely to panic or make quick, split-second decisions, such as swerving or slamming on the brakes.
New or inexperienced drivers should:
- Never allow themselves to become overconfident. This can lead to speeding and reckless decision making.
- Practice driving in all conditions – sun and rain, highway and residential streets – to develop their skills.
- Always be aware of their surroundings so they can make calm, smart decisions that reduce the risk of causing a crash.
- Eliminate any distractions that may affect their response time or take their eyes off the road ahead.
- Drive with a parent or older adult who can monitor the road with you and assist you in recognizing potential dangers.
