Winter Driving Tip #2: Reduce Speeds in Snowy Weather

Driving in a winter wonderland? Slow down!

Snow, ice, and slush all lead to wet, slippery roads. Slippery roads reduce tire traction, making it harder to control your vehicle, especially if you try to stop or turn quickly. Sudden braking, accelerating, or steering can lead to sliding, skidding, fishtailing, hydroplaning, or even loss of control.

As the driver, you need to safely adjust to winter weather conditions. Reduce speeds and give yourself extra following distance so that you have plenty of time to slow or stop before turning, changing lanes, approaching a red light or stop sign, exiting the thruway, or merging into heavy traffic.

Even the most experienced driver may ignore necessary safety precautions. Don’t let carelessness or neglect lead to a collision.
