Person crossing street at night in front of an oncoming car. Daylight Saving Time and drowsy driving awareness plus safety tips.

Daylight Saving Time & Drowsy Driving

Every year we turn our clocks back one hour for Daylight Saving Time and revel in that extra hour of sleep. But that shift in schedule can actually disrupt our normal sleep pattern and lead to drowsy driving.

When sleep is disrupted, it can lead to:
• Increased drowsiness or fatigue
• Decreased alertness/ability to concentrate
• Slower reaction times
• Poor decision making

Visibility is also disrupted by the earlier sunrises and sunsets. Sun glare and driving in the dark both make it harder to see pedestrians, cyclists, obstructions, or other hazards. It’s important to clean your windshield for total visibility + to reduce your risk of sun glare, reduce speeds at night, increase following distance, and be vigilant of the surrounding area, not just the road itself.

Remember: drowsy driving is impaired driving.
