2025 Halloween Safety Tips

Don’t let a spooktacular holiday turn into a horrorfest. Protect yourself, your property, and trick-or-treaters by putting safety first with these Halloween safety tips.

FOR PARENTS AND TRICK-OR-TREATERS:

Have a wickedly fun and safe holiday, and:

  • Make sure your child is visible by dressing them in bright, reflective costumes. (Or carry glow sticks, a flashlight, or some other form of illumination to help you see and be seen.)
  • Ensure your child’s costume fits properly to prevent tripping, and never let a mask, wig, or other accessory obstruct their ability to see.
  • Travel in groups and only trick or treat in familiar neighborhoods.
  • Encourage your child to only walk on clearly visible sidewalks and driveways – never cut across someone’s grass – and if they must cross the street, do so at an intersection and stop, look, listen before crossing.

FOR HOMEOWNERS:

Trip hazards are a big, scary liability because they put pedestrians, consumers, employees, and trick-or-treaters at risk of injury. Trip hazards can include:

  • Cords running across / Halloween decorations on your lawn
  • Uneven, broken, or damaged sidewalks/driveways
  • Missing handrails on the front porch / Broken or damaged stairs

Protect the ghosts, ghouls, goblins, and demon hunters of the 716 and:

  • Illuminate all walking paths.
  • Rope off your lawn if there are divots, bumps, or holes that a child could trip or fall into.
  • Use orange or glow in the dark traffic cones to mark construction or divots in your front lawn.
  • Spray glow in the dark paint on uneven sidewalks, the edge of your stairs, and any other potential trip or fall hazards.
  • Secure your pets.

FOR DRIVERS:

It’s important to remember that in the excitement, trick-or-treaters may not cross at intersections. Don’t put a child at risk and practice patience and vigilance:

  • Reduce your speed
  • Eliminate distractions
  • Pay extra close attention to your surroundings + the road ahead
  • Always stop at red lights, stop signs, and crosswalks
  • Be prepared to stop
  • Use your headlights and turn signals
  • Drive slowly when entering or exiting a driveway
