Pedestrian Safety Tips For Being Outside At Night

Just because it gets darker earlier doesn’t mean we give up our outdoor time. Plenty of pedestrians still walk, cycle, or jog for fun. Others may walk or ride to work, walk their dog, or constantly move in and out while delivering packages or food.

Regardless of the reason for being outside at night, it’s critical that you stay aware of your surroundings, remain cautious around moving vehicles, and be seen at all times.

Reduce your risk of being struck by a vehicle:

  • Avoid wearing dark clothing at night.
  • Wear a flourescent yellow/orange safety vest.
  • Wear reflective gear like a belt, vest, hat, or shoes.
  • Wear an LED/glow in the dark safety vest.
  • Carry a flashlight or headlamp.
  • Stay on designated walkways.
  • Avoid distracted walking.

Never assume a driver sees you: the safest course of action is to assume they don’t, and react accordingly. Be mindful and stay safe this fall.
