Fall Driving Tip #8: How to Get Out Of A Skid

It’s important to always keep a calm, clear head when driving so you can make smart choices behind the wheel. No one ever plans to skid, fishtail, hydroplane, or lose control of their vehicle, but if it happens, it’s important you understand what to do and how to get out of a skid. When it comes to wet or icy pavement, even cautious drivers may skid.

Step 1: Don’t panic. Panicking leads to poor or reckless decisions.

Step 2: Take your foot off the accelerator and avoid slamming on the brakes. (This can cause your wheels to lock up.)

Step 3: Continue to steer in the direction the rear end of your vehicle is skidding. (If your wheels are sliding left, steer left.) If your front wheels skid, steer in the direction you want your vehicle to go.

Step 4: As you regain traction, slowly brake and/or make minor steering adjustments to straighten your vehicle.

Slow down when driving in wet or icy conditions. Give yourself extra time to slow or stop by increasing following distance, reducing speeds when approaching sharp turns, and adjusting to the road conditions.
