Fall Driving Tip #4: Avoid Driving Through Leaf Piles

When the trees in WNY begin to shed their leaves, we tend to rake them up and leave them on the side of the road for collection. There are three reasons you should avoid driving through leaf piles:

  1. You never know what’s beneath. It could be a child laying in wait to scare a family member, a pothole or sinkhole, uneven asphalt, or a fallen object.
  2. Wet leaves are slippery and can stick to your tires, reducing traction and making it harder to stop quickly. Wet leaves also increase the potential for skidding if making a sudden or sharp turn.
  3. Parking on top of large piles of dry leaves, especially in periods of drought, is a potential fire hazard. Dry leaves are flammable and can ignite from the heat of your vehicle’s exhaust system.

As a driver, it’s your responsibility to protect yourself and others on the road. If you’ve been injured in an auto accident due to someone else’s negligence, you could be entitled to compensation.
