Fall Driving Tip #3: Drive Safely in Darkness.

Fall means the sun rises later and sets earlier, increasing the amount of time we spend driving in the dark. Drive safely in darkness – which is similar to driving in wet or cold weather conditions – and practice patience, vigilance, and care.

This fall, remember to:

  • Give yourself extra time so you don’t feel the need to rush
  • Obey all traffic lights and signals, even if there are no oncoming cars
  • Reduce your speeds and be vigilant for potential pedestrians or wildlife
  • As temperatures dip, never drive if your windows are fogged up with condensation; wait for them to defrost so you have total visibility
  • Increase your following distance so there’s more room between you and the vehicle ahead
  • Use low beams instead of high beams in the event of fog
  • Keep your vehicle well maintained and have properly working headlights
  • Watch for pedestrians and cyclists; they can be hard to notice if wearing dark clothing
  • Clear your windshield of leaves so they don’t get trapped beneath your wiper blades
