How Alcohol Affects Driving
Even if you believe you have a high tolerance for alcohol, the simple fact is that even one drink affects your ability to think, reason, and coordinate. Although the legal limit in New York State is .08, you should never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.
Blood alcohol concentration and how it affects driving:
BAC .02 | You begin to lose visual function and your ability to perform two tasks at the same time declines.
BAC .05 | Your coordination and ability to track moving objections declines. Steering becomes more difficult and response time begins to decrease.
BAC .08 | Your ability to concentrate, process information, and control speed declines. You begin to experience short-term memory loss.
BAC .10 | Your ability to appropriately brake/operate your vehicle declines. You lose the ability to maintain lane position and may begin to swerve, cross lines, or even leave your lane.
BAC .15 | You experience a significant increase in impairment and a substantial decline in your ability to focus on driving or process visual/auditory information.
