Summer Driving Safety Tip #15: Never drive if you’re feeling sick from extreme heat.

This summer has been incredibly hot. While we often remind you to hydrate when driving, it’s important to hydrate BEFORE you get into your vehicle if you’ve participated in outdoor activities like city attractions, farmer’s markets, craft shows, festivals, youth sporting events/camps, family parties, parks/playgrounds, and more.

Heat-related illness is a major threat in extreme heat. If you don’t properly hydrate when outdoors, you put yourself and others at risk should you attempt to drive while experiencing symptoms like nausea, cramps, sweating, dizziness, weakness, loss of consciousness, or in severe cases, heatstroke.

Never get behind the wheel if you’re not feeling well. Not only are you distracted, your reaction times will be slower, your awareness will drastically decrease, and your risk of a collision will increase exponentially.

Protect yourself, your vehicle’s occupants, and others on the road by:

  • Scheduling outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day
  • Taking frequent rest/cooling breaks in shaded areas, an air conditioned room, or your air conditioned vehicle
  • Drinking plenty of water
