Summer Driving Safety Tip #14: Avoid Sightseeing When Driving
Summer is a time for exploring because there’s always something new to see and do. However, just because you’re excited to see a new part of the Western New York region doesn’t mean it’s safe to do so while driving. Sightseeing when driving is distracted driving.
By diverting attention away from the road, you put yourself and others at risk because you:
- Decrease your awareness of other drivers and potential hazards like bicycles/motorcycles, traffic signs/signals, pedestrians, and changes in traffic patterns
- Reduce/delay your reaction time; in the event you need to brake or stop quickly, you may not have sufficient time to do so
- Lose awareness of abrupt changes in traffic patterns or sudden obstacles on the road, putting yourself at greater risk of an accident
- Increase the likelihood of losing control of your vehicle, such as unintentionally veering into the next lane
If you plan to sightsee, plan to walk, park and get out of your vehicle, take a guided tour, or sit as a passenger while someone else drives.
