Summer Driving Safety Tip #13: Slow Down or Move Over
Vehicles can stop on the side of the highway for a number of reasons:
- Emergency vehicles responding to a breakdown or accident
- Drivers who’ve pulled off road due to a vehicle malfunction
- Construction vehicles on a job site
- DOT workers mowing or clearing trash
- State troopers ticketing speeders and unsafe drivers
- Trucks stopping for a rest break
- Drivers who are lost and need to verify directions or who may need to take an emergency phone call
Regardless of the reason or vehicle type, if you see a car, truck, or SUV on the side of the road it’s important to:
- MOVE over to provide an empty lane that acts as a safety buffer
- SLOW down when it’s unsafe to change lanes and you must pass closely
Providing these vehicles with extra space is both a courtesy and protects everyone from a potential accident.
If you were injured while safely stopped on the shoulder because of a reckless or distracted driver, turn to the personal injury attorneys at Multerer Law Firm.
