Summer Driving Safety Tip #12: Treat a broken signal as a 4-way stop.

Although drivers should always remain in control of their vehicle, there is one thing out of your control: traffic signals. Sometimes a signal turns yellow when you want it to stay green. Sometimes it stays red for what feels like ages. And sometimes it doesn’t work at all. If a traffic signal goes out or is malfunctioning, exercise caution and treat it like a 4-way stop. Take turns and proceed when safe.

And remember: just because you’re being safe, doesn’t mean other drivers will. Be aware of other vehicles on the road and never attempt to “race” another vehicle.
