Summer Driving Safety Tip #9: Adjust when driving in fog.
Just like sun glare, driving in fog means decreased visibility. When hitting the road early or when changing weather patterns bring that smoky aesthetic to Western New York, knowing how to properly adjust your driving to meet changing road conditions is a must.
When driving in fog:
- Turn on your low-beam or fog lights, which are mounted low and cut through mist, fog, and rain instead of reflecting back into your eyes.
- If your vehicle doesn’t have a rear fog light, engage your taillights by switching your lights on, even if you normally use daytime running lights
- Increase following distance to compensate for lack of visibility
- Avoid passing vehicles or switching lanes – you never know if a car is behind you without their lights on
- Use your hazard lights if you need to pull off the road until the fog lifts
- Eliminate all distractions so you can put your full attention on the road ahead – wildlife, obstacles, stopped vehicles, or slowing moving vehicles may suddenly appear
