Practice Safe Driving This Independence Day Weekend

Let freedom ring and practice safe driving during the long Independence Day Weekend!

Not only does July 4th take place during the first full week of summer break, this year, July 4th falls on a Friday. This means increased traffic as people kick-off their celebrations early, from traveling to local firework displays to road tripping to visit distant family. Don’t let your holiday fizzle out because of reckless driving.

Always keep in mind three principles of defensive driving: care, caution, and courtesy:

• Care for your car and keep up with vehicle maintenance to ensure your vehicle is physically safe to be on the road. Maintain proper tire pressure and tread, get your oil changed, and have your brakes, battery, and engine routinely tested. A flat or burst tire not only puts an abrupt end to your journey, but puts you at risk for causing an accident should you lose control of your vehicle.

• Exercise caution and remain fully aware of your surroundings and the road ahead. Be on the lookout for motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians, construction workers, stopped vehicles, congestion, wildlife, and roadway obstructions. Always drive sober, minimize distractions, and take breaks when traveling long-distance to avoid fatigue. This ensures you can react safely and efficiently if another driver is being reckless or dangerous.

• Driving aggressively is never the answer, and you never know how another driver may react. Show common courtesy and allow other vehicles to merge into your lane or pass you. If a driver cuts you off, focus on driving safely, not beeping your horn or retaliating. A little kindness goes a long way!

Leaving a firework show is a guaranteed slow process, so plan ahead and be prepared for heavy traffic.
