Summer Driving Safety Tip #6: Be alert for e-bikes and electric scooters.
E-bike accidents and electric scooter accidents are on the rise in WNY, and with the growing increase in severe injuries and fatalities, it’s more important than ever to be alert for e-bikes and electric scooters on the road.
A bicycle and an e-bike do not travel at the same speed. It is very easy to misjudge how fast an e-bike is going, and assume you have extra time to turn, merge, or proceed. Impatience and poor judgement can lead to a collision, and significant injuries for riders.
Unfortunately, not all e-bike or electric scooter riders will obey traffic laws. As a driver, it’s your responsibility to be safe and:
- Avoid distractions so your focus is solely on the road ahead
- Remain vigilant for e-bikes the same way you remain vigilant for motorcycles
- Exercise caution and never rush a turn or run a light, stop sign, or yield sign to beat an e-bike
- Check all blind spots before changing lanes, turning, or pulling into a driveway or parking lot, especially at night when e-bikes and electric scooters are harder to detect
