March is Brain Injury Awareness Month
Car accidents and falls are leading causes of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), especially in teens, children, and the elderly.
In a 2018-2019 study, the CDC reported that “unintentional motor vehicle crashes accounted for approximately 17% of all TBI-related deaths” while “unintentional falls accounted for 29.9% of all TBI-related deaths.”
A 2017 study by BainLine showed that falls are the leading cause of TBIs at 47%.
Protect yourself and others, and prevent accidents that can cause brain injuries by:
• Always wearing a seatbelt when inside a motor vehicle.
• Obey the rules of the road: stop at red lights and stop signs, signal when changing lanes, eliminate distractions, and never drive when inebriated, intoxicated, or exhausted.
• Ensure all stairways, walking paths, and sidewalks are properly maintained, have safety rails, and are clear of ice and snow.
• Illuminate all walking paths and stairs.
• Mark or post signs for uneven sidewalks and wet floors.
